Response to Hi Patrick, On a large pool like your 36,000 gallon pool I would suggest the PureLine Prime 2.7 HP Variable Speed Pump this pump is nice because it will allow you to dial the HP all the way up to 2.7 HP when you have demanding conditions, but for most instances you will be running at a very low HP for circulation thus saving you on your operational costs. We wrote an Article on How Much it Costs to Operate a Pool Pump which will show you how to calculate your operational costs of a Variable Speed Pump vs. an Single Speed Pump. In the example in the article a single speed 1.5 HP pumps costs $1,062 per year to operate where a Variable Speed Pump costs $496 per year to operate. These #'s do vary when you start to look at how expensive your energy costs are and how long you run your pump per year.
