Response to Hi, The filter is sized to meet or exceed the flow rate of the pump. If you down size the filter but the pump flow rate exceed the flow rate of the filter it can create back pressure. Your filter would have to be cleaned and replaced often, your pool would not be effectively filtered which can lead to other problems. It is better to over-sized the filter rather than under-sizing it.
